Scorpaena histrio belongs to the genus Scorpaena of the family of scorpion fish. This species occurs in the eastern Pacific Mazatlan, Sonora, Mexico to Chile and from Cabo San Lucas to the Galapagos Islands at depths of 5 to 157 m. The fish can reach a length of 26 cm.
