 Description
Abstract: When oiled birds and marine mammals become oiled, their feathers and fur lose the ability to keep dry. As water soakes the animal, cold sets in and they will often go ashore to rest and attempt to get dry and warm. Predators such as foxes, bears, eagles, rats, ravens, jays and magpies will scavenge the carcasses and often become victims of the spill as well. These images were taken in March of 1996 on the north shore of St. Paul Island in the Pribilof Islands of the Bering Sea.
